Use of Chat
/linkshell is reserved for the communication between leadership only and other special notices such as Raises, Bind on demon NMs, coordinating BLMs casting spells, etc. We let it go for people to send their "Congratulations!" and thanks, and those are fine. However, random messages really do not have their place on this channel. The reason is mainly because we ask everyone to be responsible for reading everything that's said on /linkshell--as for the most part they should be instructions and important notices---and the last thing we need is to give people any sort of reason to ignore it.
You may spam in /say or /shout, or even /emote all you like. These are all filterable by anyone who does not want to see the content without missing anything specifically vital to the run.
Offensive Language
Our rules say, and have said, that as a linkshell, we will not tolerate offensive language. However, I, and any other leader simply do not have the resources and quite frankly, the willpower, to monitor or censor every single word that is said. I also have no intention of enumerating every single topic that can and cannot be covered in party chat, because that's beyond ridiculous.
Listen, I fully appreciate that everyone has varied backgrounds, and twice a week we all get together in Dynamis and try to have fun out of 3-4 hour event. Some of the conversations that come up in party chat because of those backgrounds and unique character quirks--and sometimes even in say, and regrettably, in /linkshell--are part of that fun because they help keep us entertained, pass the time, and bolster a sense of camaraderie that effectively increases our own performance and the willingness of people to continue participating with the linkshell.
However, sometimes these conversations can be distracting, incendiary, and clearly out of good taste even for fringe standards. If there is a subject that is getting out of hand, any member should be able to feel like they can ask the discussion to be toned down. Or if the subject is really inappropriate (objectively speaking to a reasonable person's standards), they should be able to ask that the subject be changed without being made to feel like they are being "uptight" or ostracized/isolated.
Swearing follows the same ideas; I'm not going to control every single word everyone says because I really have no desire to, and I really couldn't police it even if I wanted to. If I removed everyone from the linkshell that ever swore in /party, /say, or /linkshell, this linkshell would probably have one person it in, and it certainly wouldn't be me. Although it obviously doesn't catch every word that anyone could potentially find offensive, turn on the language filter (one cannot argue being offended about some of the content without at least taking this action on their own). If it's getting out of hand (again, within reason), ask the people involved to stop.
It is not my, or any other leader's, job to enforce the game's "T" rating. However, we have had guidelines on decency since the Very Beginning, and those have to be observed by everyone. Please know where the line is and when you should get back from over it.
If you have a situation that involves this kind of thing that you need to have addressed by a leader, please have something tangible for us to look at (ie., a screenshot) so that we are able to make the determination whether the content was in fact inappropriate and have something with which we can address the parties involved. Having context is vital here, as in order to make a fair assessment we need to see not only what was said, but why it may have been said in the first place. Unless it is recurring and public (and thus, many people are already aware of it), it is difficult for anything generic with regard to language to really be actionable. We will definitely get involved if any of this involves deliberate attacks on another player, as that has no place in our linkshell, ever.
