Use of Chat

/linkshell is reserved for the communication between leadership only and other special notices such as Raises, Bind on demon NMs, coordinating BLMs casting spells, etc. We let it go for people to send their "Congratulations!" and thanks, and those are fine. However, random messages really do not have their place on this channel. The reason is mainly because we ask everyone to be responsible for reading everything that's said on /linkshell--as for the most part they should be instructions and important notices---and the last thing we need is to give people any sort of reason to ignore it.

You may spam in /say or /shout, or even /emote all you like. These are all filterable by anyone who does not want to see the content without missing anything specifically vital to the run.

Offensive Language

Our rules say, and have said, that as a linkshell, we will not tolerate offensive language. However, I, and any other leader simply do not have the resources and quite frankly, the willpower, to monitor or censor every single word that is said. I also have no intention of enumerating every single topic that can and cannot be covered in party chat, because that's beyond ridiculous.

Listen, I fully appreciate that everyone has varied backgrounds, and twice a week we all get together in Dynamis and try to have fun out of 3-4 hour event. Some of the conversations that come up in party chat because of those backgrounds and unique character quirks--and sometimes even in say, and regrettably, in /linkshell--are part of that fun because they help keep us entertained, pass the time, and bolster a sense of camaraderie that effectively increases our own performance and the willingness of people to continue participating with the linkshell.

However, sometimes these conversations can be distracting, incendiary, and clearly out of good taste even for fringe standards. If there is a subject that is getting out of hand, any member should be able to feel like they can ask the discussion to be toned down. Or if the subject is really inappropriate (objectively speaking to a reasonable person's standards), they should be able to ask that the subject be changed without being made to feel like they are being "uptight" or ostracized/isolated.

Swearing follows the same ideas; I'm not going to control every single word everyone says because I really have no desire to, and I really couldn't police it even if I wanted to. If I removed everyone from the linkshell that ever swore in /party, /say, or /linkshell, this linkshell would probably have one person it in, and it certainly wouldn't be me. Although it obviously doesn't catch every word that anyone could potentially find offensive, turn on the language filter (one cannot argue being offended about some of the content without at least taking this action on their own). If it's getting out of hand (again, within reason), ask the people involved to stop.

It is not my, or any other leader's, job to enforce the game's "T" rating. However, we have had guidelines on decency since the Very Beginning, and those have to be observed by everyone. Please know where the line is and when you should get back from over it.

If you have a situation that involves this kind of thing that you need to have addressed by a leader, please have something tangible for us to look at (ie., a screenshot) so that we are able to make the determination whether the content was in fact inappropriate and have something with which we can address the parties involved. Having context is vital here, as in order to make a fair assessment we need to see not only what was said, but why it may have been said in the first place. Unless it is recurring and public (and thus, many people are already aware of it), it is difficult for anything generic with regard to language to really be actionable. We will definitely get involved if any of this involves deliberate attacks on another player, as that has no place in our linkshell, ever.

Qufim => Bastok, 20 April

A poll has been posted regarding replacing a future Qufim with a Bastok run in April. Please look over the poll and vote, as it will close in a week.

Run Announcement

On Wednesday we will be running Dynamis-Jeuno. The goal is, as always, a full clear of the zone.

Item Preparation

No special medicines are required for this city zone. Members with jobs that cannot function while silenced should bring Echo Drops.

Lotting Eligibility

No special lotting criteria other than active membership are enforced for this city zone.

Jeuno sounds fun.

Edit: I find the whole language conversation rather ridiculous actually. I'm well aware that there is a line as to what's obviously offensive and what isn't, and personally I don't think that anything that I have read (or said) in any party chat has come anywhere near it. I really have trouble accepting that this wasn't raised with some vindictive intentions by whoever's complaining, but that's neither here nor there. Being told what I can and cannot say is really something that gets me angry, so I'll refrain from saying anything more on the subject.

It would be nice if the people QQing about the language would maybe say something before QQing to you. I think I have a good idea of who is complaining and it's quite obvious to me they're doing it out of spite/wtf ever other reason they have.

If you're unhappy with the other 17 people in your party carrying on a conversation, ask to be put in another alliance. I have no problem moving you.

I always encourage that people are able to resolve their issues with the others involved before bringing it to the point where I or anyone else in leadership has to be intervene. With things like this I believe it can sometimes be the case where someone isn't necessarily realizing they're going overboard until someone points it out to them.

However, it is also the case that people are not going to speak up if they expect that nothing's going to happen or the situation will only worsen. There's nothing I can say to resolve this other than to speak up anyway; if things do worsen then we can move you to another alliance and take further action if necessary. It should also NOT be the case where there is a double standard on the rules, decency should be observed in every alliance.

I also want to make it clear that content that is CLEARLY (as in, it's not a stretch at all) inappropriate still has no place here, regardless of who is in the alliance, and it should still be avoided.

I'll be at the run, DRK or PLD preferred. Because of work, I may be a little bit late.

I personally have a rather thick skin, so I'm rarely offended by things people say. However, there have been some things said in party chat that really are inappropriate for the setting. To some degree people need to just deal with some things that they may be offended by, but that only goes so far. Some of the things said really are too far, and I'm not surprised that there's a complaint.

The people that complain about it aren't doing it out of spite. They just want to have an enjoyable experience in Dynamis.

Our group is not a very close one. We only meet twice a week for 3-4 hours and are constantly getting new people and losing old people. So you can't really be as free with what you say as with people you've known for years and talk to daily. There's a lot of inside jokes that a lot of people just won't get, and therefore won't understand what's said in the correct context.

It's just a matter of be courteous to other people.
